The Power of SMS

Imagine you sat down to contact a local business customer support line. You grabbed your phone and sent a text to the number you found on the website. Who is the AGA?

The American Galvanizers Association (AGA) is a non-profit trade organization that helps people who work with galvanizing, like architects, engineers, and contractors, to protect metal from rusting through a process called “hot-dip galvanizing.”

They give technical advice on new ways to use this process, as well as support those who are already up-to-date with current technological developments for corrosion control. The AGA has been around for 87 years, and their goal is to make sure that galvanized metal lasts a long time and is used safely and responsibly.

The AGA’s mission is to represent the hot-dipped galvanized steel industry across North America, as they are widely known as the recognized authority and go-to resource.

Why Did the AGA Enable SMS in Microsoft Teams?

Although the AGA’s headquarters are located in Colorado, they support their members throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other areas across the globe. To simplify communication, they’ve been using Microsoft Teams since 2020 for all of their internal communications. Doing as much as possible within the Teams environment has made it easy for the staff to stay connected, no matter where they are.

However, they stumbled upon a challenge. Since the members have access to the AGA’s business line, they didn’t always realize it was not a cell phone and would unknowingly try sending a text. Since, at the time, the line wasn’t textable, the message wasn’t received.

So, what’s a large organization to do? Find a way to activate SMS in Microsoft Teams, of course - which is exactly what the AGA did. First, the team researched and considered various solutions. One idea included providing staff with an additional work phone. This instance would have made it possible for members to have the option to text staff, but everyone would have needed to carry around two phones, which wasn’t ideal. The other concern was the added expenses. So, they got their IT team involved and focused on finding an answer to: “how can we make our Teams line textable?”

She continues to explain, “By the time we were ready to roll it out to the entire staff, everything was sorted out.”

In addition, just being able to receive texts on the AGA’s business lines has been a big change for the organization. Members are appreciative when they find out they can text the line, especially if they’re in an instance when they can’t immediately make a phone call. They also know response time is much faster with text messages than email. It’s been equally as helpful for the leadership team that’s often on the road and frequently needs to contact members.

Finances are always a concern when integrating a new tech tool, and the AGA was hoping to avoid incurring additional costs. The AGA already had their phone lines working through Microsoft Teams. It just so happened that the Microsoft license they were using was about to expire. Lindsley explained that one of the first things they learned when switching to Clerk was that they were able to change to a less expensive license. “It was a win-win. We were actually going to end up saving money over our previous phone bill and get additional functionality,” she says.
